Martien has over 10 years experience in the banking sector, with over eight of these in the Life Sciences Venture Capital industry. He is partner at Forbion Capital Partners, and in addition to his deal responsibilities, has significant responsibility for operations and finance. Martien was previously partner at ABN AMRO Capital Life Sciences (AAC LS), before it became the independent body Forbion Capital Partners.

Martien joined AAC LS in 2000 as an investment director, where he participated or led the AAC LS investments in over 14 different companies. He actively developed the investment strategy in Medical Devices and focused on Interventional Cardiology by expanding into the ATI (Accelerating Technologies Inc) formula. This segment takes currently 25-30% of the investment portfolio.

Martien’s recent experience as partner at AAC LS includes leading the investment in Santaris A/S, raising EUR40 million in an international syndicate for this company.

Martien’s other portfolio of investment experience at AAC LS is impressive. It includes the lead investment in 2003 in ATI, Inc., a medical device incubator in New Jersey, where he developed an appropriate financial structure for ATI that was instituted after the USD 32 million financing closed. Martien has taken board seats in all the ATI investments including FlowMedica, X-Cell Medical, Mitralign, Circulite and Pathway. In the same year, he also invested in and joined the board of Impella Cardiosystems, managing the investment until 2005, when Impella was sold for shares and milestone payments to ABIOMED, Inc., for a large profit.

In addition to this, Martien took the lead in the ABN AMRO investment in the Series F round of Acadia, Inc. and took a board seat, where he was chairman of the Audit Committee. The company had an IPO in 2004 and a PIPE financing in 2005. Martien resigned from the board in September, 2005.

Martien joined ABN AMRO Private Equity in 1998, focusing on minority equity stakes in small and medium sized businesses in the Dutch market. In this role, he was responsible for multiple transactions, exits and restructurings, and led an international syndicate in Series B round of Augeo Software systems.

Prior to this Martien worked as a Senior Analyst in Group Planning and Control at ABN AMRO Bank NV, where he implemented new tools for credit pricing and country risk management.

Martien began his career at EDON NV, after receiving his Masters Degree in Econometrics at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. At EDON NV Martien was assistant to the CFO in the Cable and Telecoms business unit, responsible for budgeting and financing.
