Avi has been working with Forbion since early 2007, mainly on medical technologies opportunities. Concurrently he is the CEO and Chairman of Neovasc, a Israel based, clinical stage, interventional cardiology start-up company with Boston Scientific and Abbot among its investors.
As a partner at Giza Venture Capital, an Israel- based diversified venture capital fund managing over 600 million dollars, Avi established and headed the life science practice. The life science activity focused on medical technologies and drug development. Avi led 12 investments over a period of 5 years yielding two trade sales, three IPO’s and a remaining portfolio of promising active companies.
During that period Avi, together with a senior executive from Teva Pharmaceuticals, was a founder of BiolineRx, an Israeli drug development company. Within three years the company managed to build a pipeline of nine products with three at the clinical phase, and went public as the biggest biomedical IPO on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE).
Avi joined Giza after completing an MBA program at the Tel Aviv University.
Prior to Giza Avi was a psychiatrist and served as a Deputy Director General of The Abarbanel Mental Health Center, Tel Aviv University Medical School and was the head of the residency program of the medical school. He was also the chief editor of the Israel National Boards of Psychiatry.
Avi had his residency in psychiatry and postdoctoral fellowship in psychopharmacology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. There, he served as the chief of the clinical unit of the Division of Neuroscience, New York State Psychiatric Institute, Columbia Presbyterian Medical center.
After graduating the Tel Aviv University Medical School, Avi served as the Chief Medical Officer of the Naval Commando (Navy Seals) of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
